A Far Away Festival …
![]()
If continuing anti-Israel boycotts were not so nasty some of them would be quite absurd.
The organisers of the Edinburgh International Film Festival for example, have bowed to pressure from the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign and rejected a £300 grant from the Israel Embassy to fund the participation of an Israeli film maker.
This craven behaviour is particularly disappointing as less than seven days ago, The Jewish Chronicle reported a festival spokesman as saying that the event was based on cultural and artistic principles not political allegiance.
The film in question is Tali Shalom Ezer’s Surrogate whose theme appears to be totally non-political and has been praised by festival organisers as “brave and original”.
Their daft and simplistic decision is thrown into yet sharper relief when one reflects on the continuing support for The UK Jewish Film Festival on Tour from Manchester City Council. This year, guests at the reception hosted by the Lord Mayor included a ‘short’ made in Israel as from memory, did that in 2008!
The UK Parliament is presently examining its own history, so I suggest that the EFF organisers are short-listed for the Neville Chamberlain Award for Pusillanimity!
